A special skill-training program for coaches to benefit their local communities

AWT hosted three-day training for women coaches in the local Jordan community to counsel women who have endured domestic, economic, and physical violence.

Amman, Jordan (ACCTS-AWT) – On the 26th of September, ACCTS partnered with Jordan River Foundation, the Training and Consultation sector. Jordan River Foundation is a non-profit organization that has initiated numerous socioeconomic projects for women to provide employment opportunities that enhance their livelihoods.

Together we coordinated a training session about the “Special Concepts and Skills in Equipping Trainers” whereby fifteen women attended the three-day training. This was a follow-up session aimed at volunteers and workers who previously took trainings on the concepts of protection and violence against women.

The UN Jordan offices published a report in 2016 highlighting the ever-present issue of violence in households. Its findings included a study conducted by the National Council for Family Affairs (2013). Amongst many interesting conclusions, it found that the majority of violence victims endured multiple forms of violence including emotional, economic and physical violence. Furthermore, it discovered that the majority of victims were female adults with little to no education degree and minimal legal understanding.

In our training, therefore, we had the goal to educate the participants on the key information regarding different behaviors, methods of connecting with people, and how to effectively communicate and different training assets to deal with every case style. This equipped women with the means to build a system in their local communities in which victims of family violence can seek counsel through the trainees.

Our session was carried out through multiple methodologies i.e. role-play, small working groups, brainstorming, and discussing. Participants were able to learn interactively and began to identify different trends and concepts individually.

Many women were greatly inspired by the training they received. One participant commented:

“This training impacted my personality. I learned characteristics of my own personality and I have decided to improve the way I preform my work and acquire new skills.” - Ms. Hattar

With no doubt, the session was well received. Women were equipped with new sets of communication and connection theories which can be put into practice in their local communities. These participants are now able to take more responsibility and reach out to women of their regional society by using key aspects of the training.

Moreover, the participants were moved by the personal benefits of the session. Many women became more aware of their own personality traits through the communication theory. In this case, women learnt how to effectively use their strengths in areas of service for their community so that they could become successful trainers.
